Grounded in Compassion, Driven by Excellence
At Folk Care at Home, our story begins with a simple belief, that every older person deserves to live with dignity and safety in the place they love most...their home. We are a nurse-led service dedicated to bridging the gap between clinical excellence and heartfelt companionship.

About Folk Care at Home
We (Rae and Melissa) created Folk Care at Home after caring for our own older family members.
Through that experience, we saw firsthand how overwhelming and confusing it can be to navigate care at home...and how much better it could be.
That’s why we built Folk Care at Home around what truly matters . Clear communication, genuine compassion and strong clinical oversight.
We take the time to listen, to understand your needs and to support you in a way that feels safe, respectful and personal. Every member of our team is carefully chosen because they share these same values.

Because we know how much it matters to feel safe, supported and cared for in the place you call home.

The Hearts Behind the Care
Meet our Founders
Rae Brittain
and
Melissa Karatjas
Rae
With more than 25 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, Rae has cared for older people and their families, in both hospital and home settings. Through this experience, she has seen how important it is for people and families to feel supported, informed and genuinely cared for during times of change, illness and ageing.
Rae also understands this journey on a personal level. Over many years, she helped care for her own ageing parents and eventually faced the difficult decision of moving them into residential aged care - an experience that was far from ideal for both her parents and the family. Looking back, she believes that remaining at home with the right support, guidance and clinical oversight would have provided greater comfort, dignity and quality of life.
These experiences shaped Rae’s passion for creating a service that helps older people remain safe, comfortable and confident in their own homes for as long as possible. She believes compassionate care begins with listening, building trust and tailoring support around the individual and their family.
Mel
For more than 25 years, Mel has successfully run a people-focused recruitment business built on trust, relationships and genuinely caring for others. At the heart of her approach has always been strong family values, shaped by the close support and love shared with her parents and aunt, who all played an important role in helping care for their youngest family member born with complex cardiac issues.
Those same values continued throughout Mel’s life as she later helped care for her father and aunt during illness, including supporting them through palliative care at home. These experiences gave her a deep understanding of how important compassionate, reliable and respectful care can be for both individuals and their families during life’s most vulnerable moments. Mel brings this same warmth, empathy and commitment to Folk Care at Home, where building trusted relationships and supporting families with genuine care is at the centre of everything we do.
Â
Together, we bring a shared commitment to compassionate, trustworthy care, combining clinical experience, shared values and a genuine understanding of the challenges families can face as loved ones age. We understand that every family is different, and that caring for an ageing loved one can sometimes bring emotional and complex decisions for everyone involved. We believe the right support, communication and guidance can make all the difference in helping people remain safe, comfortable and confident at home.
By combining Rae’s extensive nursing experience with Mel’s lifelong focus on people and relationships, we are dedicated to building a caring, reliable team that shares these same values — ensuring every person receives thoughtful, respectful and personalised support at home.
